About USMLE Step 1
USMLE Step 1 is arguably the most important exam in a future doctor’s career. Step 1 assesses whether you can understand and apply important concepts of the sciences basic to the practice of medicine. The test covers anatomy, behavioral sciences, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, and interdisciplinary topics, such as nutrition, genetics, and aging.
Step 1 is a one-day exam, divided into seven 60-minute blocks and administered in one 8-hour testing session. The number of questions per block will vary, but will not exceed 40, with the total number of questions on the exam not exceeding 280.
The current minimum score to pass USMLE Step 1 is 196, with a theoretical maximum of 300. The national average is 229 with a standard deviation of 20. Highly competitive specialties such as dermatology and plastic surgery have an average Step 1 of 250 amongst matriculants, which approximates to the 85th percentile.
