2018-2019

1. Why are you specifically interested in pursuing your medical education at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine even if you gain acceptances to other highly ranked medical schools?

The first step to answering this question is to do some research on the program website to understand some of its nuances. Is it very strong in a particular field of research, or perhaps in community clinical work for the underserved? If one of these aspects aligns with your strengths or interests, explain how you are a great fit for this reason. Outline how these opportunities will help you grow toward your career goals as you envision them. Think about the opportunities the location provides in terms of clinical experience and social experience as well. Be sure to tailor your answer to the unique aspects of Mayo Clinic Arizona and detail why it stands out to you above other medical schools. Remember even it is not your top choice, without explicitly stating that you will have to convey why you are strongly interested in the program.

2. We are all unique in different ways. Explain how your personal diversity manifests in your personal and professional activities.

Start by brainstorming what is unique about you and your background. Is it your place of birth, your family, your culture, or you path to medicine? Also consider prior adversity you have had to overcome and how that has shaped your values. Consider 1-2 of these characteristics to focus on. Now consider how they affect your personal and professional behavior and tendencies. You will need to answer how these unique aspects of your nature manifest in your personal and professional life. Weave a story which shows how your unique characteristics will contribute to your medical school class. Consider the effect you might have on your peers, professors and patients.

3. Share with us your thoughts about the relevance – or not – of diverse learning environments in which you wish to learn medicine.

It is likely important to most people to have diversity of training in terms of environment, patient population, learning modalities. Discuss what about this is important to you and how it will help you become a better physician. You might consider looking into the different training sites that Mayo Arizona has and how they offer different learning opportunities. You can incorporate this into your answer to make it more specific. Do not focus on this though as the crux of the prompt is your general thoughts on diversity of learning environments.
